Why Melbourne Calls Us
A hardware-store spray usually angers a European wasp nest without reaching the queen. We treat the colony properly, in protective gear, with the area kept safe while we work.
Living Through Wasp Season
January to April is peak European wasp season in Melbourne. These habits reduce the risk while colonies are at their largest.
Stay Safe Outdoors
- Check drink cans and glasses before sipping
- Keep food covered at barbecues and picnics
- Inspect the lawn before mowing or whipper-snipping
- Wear shoes on grass in late summer
- Never swat at a wasp – it releases an alarm pheromone
If You Are Stung
- Move away calmly from the nest area
- Wash the site and apply a cold pack
- Watch for swelling of the face, lips or throat
- Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or dizziness
- Call 000 if a severe reaction begins

Wasp Control FAQs
Still unsure what you have? Describe the nest and where it is.
What makes European wasps different?
They are bright yellow with black bands and black antennae, they nest underground or in cavities rather than in the open, and their colonies reach thousands of workers by autumn. They are far more aggressive than paper wasps and will pursue a perceived threat.
How much does European wasp treatment cost?
From $159 for an accessible nest, or $249-$399 for underground colonies, wall cavities, roof voids and work at height, which is where most European wasp nests end up. Clear written quote before treatment.
Why are they suddenly everywhere in February?
The colony has been building since spring and peaks in late summer and early autumn. Foraging switches toward protein and sugar late in the season, which is why they turn up around bins, drinks and barbecues.
I found a hole in the lawn with wasps going in – is that a nest?
Almost certainly, and it is the classic European wasp setup. Do not mow near it, do not pour anything into it, and keep children and pets away. Call us and we will treat the entrance directly.
Are European wasps a problem across Victoria?
Yes. They are an introduced species and a well-known Victorian pest, and treating nests on private property is encouraged. Because nests are usually hidden underground or in cavities, professional treatment is strongly recommended.
